Q: Once converted to Daoism, is it possible also to learn Buddhism? Is there a difference between the two religion’s objectives?
A: Confucian, Buddhism, and Daoism are our traditional culture heritage. But there are many differences between Daoism and Buddhism. Daoism, in general, paid tribute to Master Lao-tze Li as their founder. In addition, there are those who believed in Jade Emperor as their founder. But to Buddhism, the interaction of all things is according to the cause and the effect. The reason for god to be god is that he had done numerous good deeds, thus he was able to ascend to heaven and received the fruit of godhood. And according to the cause and the effect, god, too, will experience birthed, aged, ailed and died. To become a god is but a temporality. Though he would bless and protect us, he is not eternal. This is called Impermanent.
Buddha is not about god or anti-god. He talked about enlightenment and instructed us how to leave suffering behind and to be blissful. If you think that to believe in god is a joyful thing, then you should worship him. But if you don’t want to continue the cycle of reincarnation, to leave suffering behind and to be blissful, then you have to meditate and learn Buddhism process. By doing so, your life will be able to get ultimate release.
